BASKETBALL

INTRODUCTION

First and foremost, this blog is currently dedicated to E-Learning and every post are academic-related. For starter, there are various type of sports been played world wide but I'm just going to narrow it down to single sports that has been and will always be my passion, it is the BASKETBALL! This sports required one to have a good stamina, skills and the advantage of height (not really a necessity though, as it is just an advantage). Now basketball is played all around such as in China and Japan. the world but typically dominated by African-American. The official and well known basketball international level game is known as NBA and there are also game for women known as WNBA.


OBJECTIVE


This post will discuss about the ever popular game played around the world, it is the basketball. It will also discuss on the history, rules and regulations, positions, fouls and violations of basketball.

BASKETBALL HISTORY


HISTORY

Early YMCA gymnasium court
Basketball was discovered in North America by Dr. James Naismith is December 1891. He was a professor and an instructor in Young Men's Christian Association Training School (YMCA) or known as Springfield College, Massachusetts, USA today. It was winter back then when Dr. James Naismith need to think of something to keep his boys occupied and he wrote basics rule of the early basketball. He started to nail a peach basket onto a 10-foot (3.05m) elevated track. Basically, the players need to throw the ball into the basket. After a while, they found that the basket was impractical as ball need to be taken out manually each time after a ball has entered the basket. So the bottom of the basket was removed eventually. 

Modern Basketball
In 1906, the peach basket was replaced with metal hoops and backboard. In time, the hoops was perfected until the ball could merely pass through. Thebackboard was invented so rebound shot could be possibly made. In the early year, there are no specific ball for basketball. The first ever ball made for basketball was brown but it is hard to be seen by the player as well as the spectators and eventually the ball's color was changed into orange as seen today.

At the beginning, dribbling (bouncing the ball while running) was not part of basketball. The ball movement was merely made by passing the ball to the other teammates. Dribbling was later introduced in the 1950's as the manufacturer improved the ball symmetry from its assymetric shape to what it appears to be today. The first ever game was held in the YMCA gymnasium on 20th January 1892.

BASKETBALL RULES & REGULATIONS






INTRODUCTION


The aimed of the game was to get the ball into the opponent's basket. This attempt is call shot. Each shot will be awarded 2points or 3points (in the shot was made outside the D line or three-point arc). The team that had the most point wins.

The game is consist of four quarters of 12 minutes (NBA rules). Team exchange basket in the second half. Five player is allowed for each team at a time which consist of point guard, shooting guard, small forward, power forward and center. Exchange are unlimited but can only be made when the game is stopped.

The standard uniform for the sport is a short, a jersey which number should be printed clearly and high-cut shoes design especially for this game to prevent ankle injuries and provide extra ankle support.

BASKETBALL POSITIONS

INTRODUCTION

There are 5 positions in a court at a time. They are divided into two parts which is back court and front court. Back court consist of Point Guard (SG) and Shooting Guard (SG) while Back court consist of Small Forward (SF), Power Forward (PF) and Center.

Point Guard (PG)

Also referred to as 'number 1'. PG is typically the best ball controller as passer in the team. PG is equivalent to the roles of Captain as they will coordinate the teammates and the ball passed or where the ball will be passed. The are usually are smaller in size. Shortest PG recorded was only 160cm.

Shooting Guard (SG)

Shooting Guard or SG is also known as 'number 2'. SG is the most skillful player in the team to perform a shot with high possibilities or good ratio for the ball to go into the net. A versatile SG can also perform the role of a Point Guard which have a good ball handling skills and amazing shooting skills. With such skills possessed, they could also dribble the ball to the net all by themselves without the help from the teammates.

Small Forward (SF)

Also known as 'number 3'. They are little smaller than Power Forward. Small Forward are said to be the most versatile position in the court as they are fast, have the strength for guarding and good shooting skills. SF roles are quite similar to Power Forward and Shooting Guard. Sometimes their role are interchangeable. 

Power Forward (PF)

Might be referred to as 'number 4'. They have quite a similar role as Center. On offense, they are capable of making mid-range shoots or 'post-up' (playing with their backs to the basket). On defense, they will guarding the opposite team's Power Forward and guard under the net. They are typically 7ft tall (200+cm).

Center 

Also known as 'number 5' or 'pivot'. They usually play near the baseline or close to the basket(low post). Center contributes to the team using their physiques and skills, they gathered rebounds (balls that did not made into the net and the ball touches the ring), contesting shots and setting screens in the game. They are typically the tallest man in the team.

BASKETBALL VIOLATIONS


VIOLATIONS

1. Travelling - holding the ball while running
2. Double dribbling - dribble with both hands at the same time
3. Back court violation - when the ball has been passed to the other half of the court, it cannot be passed back
4. Cannot touch the ball when the balls going downwards towards the hoop (except for goaltending*)
5. Basket interference - Cannot touch the ball while it is in or on the hoop

BASKETBALL FOULS



Physical Advantage
DEFINITION

An attempt in taking physical advantage towards another player is call foul. Coach or player that shows poor sportsmanship can also be declared as foul by the referee which also known as technical foul. 

FREE THROWS

The fouled played may be awarded with a free throw or more (1 point each) or the fouled player could pass inbound again. The fouled team will also be rewarded with free throw(s).
